Store more with our top scoring Network Attached Storage (NAS) drives

Justin Yu Justin Yu, April 6, 2009

High resolution images, albums of mp3s, homemade movies, and other forms of multimedia love to gobble up your precious storage space. External hard drives are all well and good, but laptop users that don't want to be physically tethered by an unsightly USB cord should consider a Network Attached Storage(NAS) drive. Nas cuts out all the messy wires and instead connects to a computer network to allow shared access across multiple devices. Many offer an extra USB port to allow for easy expansion or print sharing, others feature external eSATA drives for even more storage space, and some even let you stream multimedia content to your stereo and TV set using modern gaming consoles. If you're a fiend for storage or just hate pressing that darned delete key, a NAS drive can be your perfect solution.

The Bottom Line The Synology DS107+ is the most sophisticated NAS device we've tested to date. Its more advanced features require some networking know-how, but the included software and Web interface go a long way in helping you tackle the various offerings. You can't beat all the features you get for the price. The D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure is a comprehensive solution to extend your network storage and functionality. It offers great performance and, despite its long list of features, remains very easy to use. The tiniest of NAS drives, the Buffalo LinkStation Mini keeps up with its full-size competition in terms of both features and performance. However, you'll pay a premium price for this small, silent networked drive. The Western Digital MyBook World Edition is a simple-to-use NAS drive that makes remote access and file sharing easy for even beginners. Only its slow data transfer speed gives us pause. The QNAP TS-109 Pro II is a single-volume NAS drive that offers a lot more than just network storage. It's a little pricier than its peers, but its many features--including PC-free downloads--are well organized and easy to use. If you don't need remote access and can look past sluggish RAID 1 performance, the Zyxel NSA-220 NAS drive offers a useful set of basic features, solid performance, and best-in-class Web-based management.
